Being specific is important for any challenge, And walking is the top priority at the moment, seeing as we are going to be doing so much of it. Cathy and myself took some time out and visited Berlin in Germany for some site seeing, and planned to walk through the city rather than use public transport. Over four days we managed to cover around 10 km per day, remember when your planning to do any type of endurance sport or long enduring event It's important to take the correct walking shoes or boots, I went unprepared and tried to walk in the brand converse, this worked until day 3 until I found my feet were swollen with blisters, I had to soak my feet in a bucket of ice for a few hours.
I know Berlin is not specific to climbing any mountain at altitude but was great for getting used to walking long distances in a foreign environment, which happened to be very humid and hot and made it very uncomfortable at times, temperatures ranging from 32 Degrees on the first day, then 25 degrees every other day.
along with the physical and mental prep, it would not work without an engine to keep your body going, so on returning from Berlin we both decided to take a visit to the functional gut clinic to under go a hydrogen and methane test to start with the process of making a strong gut and help identify any allergies.
A hydrogen and methane breath test provides information about the digestion of certain sugars or carbohydrates, such as milk sugar (lactose) or fruit sugar (fructose). This will help determine if you are intolerant to or can’t digest certain sugars. Bacterial overgrowth can cause a variety of symptoms including nausea, diarrhoea, bloating, gas, and abdominal cramps. To avoid any uncomfortable moments climbing to the roof of Africa, it's best to start now with the process of elimination. When the results have come back from our Hydrogen and Methane test we will then know what the next step will be towards a healthy digestive system.
